Entropion & Ectropion

Lower eyelids that curl inward (entropion lids) or outward (ectropion lids) can cause extreme pain and deteriorate the eye’s overall health. In either case, our experienced oculoplastic surgeon can relieve your symptoms and restore your eye’s health.

Entropion and Ectropion Treatment

Entropion happens when the lower eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes and lid to rub against the eye. The most common complications of this condition are a stinging sensation, moderate to severe tear production, and chronic red eyes.

Ectropion happens when the lower eyelid turns outward, revealing too much of the eye and delicate tissue within the lid. The symptoms of an ectropion eyelid are similar to an entropion one.

Both entropion and ectropion may develop for a number of reasons including previous trauma to the eyelid, weakening muscles around the eye, a damaged facial nerve, or chronic infection, among other factors. In either case, our experienced ophthalmologists can relieve your symptoms and restore your eye’s health.

What to Expect

We perform a comprehensive eyelid evaluation to customize repair for your needs. Treatment can include tightening the lid to rotate the eyelid out or in. Treatment can vary widely, making it important to determine the cause of a patient’s ectropion or entropion. Once your doctor has evaluated your eyelid, they will determine what procedure is best to repair your eyelid and get your eye healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is entropion?

Entropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns inward. Because this causes the eyelashes and lid to rub against the eye, it is important to seek treatment to avoid vision loss.

Common symptoms include a stinging sensation, moderate to severe tear production, and chronic red eyes. Previous trauma to the eyelid, weakening muscles around the eye, a damaged facial nerve, or chronic infection are factors that can cause entropion.

Can entropion cause blindness?

Entropion can damage your eye when your eyelid rubs against your cornea. Over time, this can lead to vision loss if left untreated. Schedule a consultation with your doctor immediately when you notice impacted vision.

What is ectropion?

Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward. Since this reveals too much of the eye and delicate tissue within the lid, it is important to seek treatment to avoid eye damage and vision loss.

Symptoms of an ectropion lid are stinging sensation, moderate to severe tear production, and chronic red eyes. Previous trauma to the eyelid, weakening muscles around the eye, a damaged facial nerve, or chronic infection are factors that can cause ectropion.

Can entropion correct itself?

Surgery is typically required to correct entropion. Artificial tears and lubricating drops can be used to relieve symptoms temporarily. Left untreated, entropion can lead to vision loss.
